WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CORONA VIRUS

The coronavirus has become a global burden and fear which we cannot go a minute without hearing of or talking about it. I’ve put together some facts about this virus which you need to know.

As of Thursday afternoon, there are 1,636 cases of the novel coronavirus in the United States, according to the state and local health agencies, governments and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Washington, where there have been 457 reported cases, 31 people have died from the virus.

Seattle (Washington) area is the epicenter of the Corona Virus outbreak in the U.S recording about 457 cases with 41 deaths (31 from Washington) out of the 1,636 cases in the U.S as at Thursday March 12, 2020.

The elderly and people with heart diseases and diabetes are very prone to the virus because e they are very stressful and have weak immune system (Mark Parkinson, American Health Care Association President told CNN).

According to CNN, the president of Italy’s Medical Guild Varese, who is 67 years old died on Tuesday March, 10, 2020 for respiratory failure. The virus might have killed him because his immune system was probably too weak.

When a person has acute respiratory failure, the usual exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs does not occur. As a result, enough oxygen cannot reach the heart, brain, or the rest of the body. This can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath

There have been rumors in Ghana that taking alcohol can help fight the corona virus but according to The National Center for Biotechnology Information of the United States, Alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and benzodiazepines are the most commonly abused drugs that may induce events leading to acute respiratory failure. Therefore taking in alcohol may rather make you prone to the virus although using alcohol-based sanitizers can help prevent the infection.

According to U.S Centers for Disease Control, older people are twice as likely to have serious illness from the novel coronavirus. Therefore older people are advised to stay at home as much as possible, especially those with chronic diseases. Even if you have to go out, wait for later hours when there are not much people around.

Based on a post by CNN on Monday March 9, 2020, people infected by the virus tend to develop the symptoms about five days to two weeks after exposure therefore it is necessary quarantine individuals suspected to have contracted the virus for a minimum of two weeks to avoid spread because symptomatic screening for the virus such as temperature checks at the airports may be missing recently infected people.

Corona Virus Airport Screening is not adequate

Kenneth Mak, Director of Medical Services (Singapore Ministry of Health) advises that people disinfect objects and equipment they touch with their bare hands such as mobile phones frequently. This can be done by using a wiper and a disinfectant such as sanitizers.

Wearing a mask cannot automatically protect you from the infection although it can prevent the infection through your mouth and nose.

According to CNN, no United States corona virus case was caught through temperature checks.

According to Elizabeth Schneider (37 years old), a survivor of the virus from Seattle in Washington, United States, she survived the corona virus by staying home and not panicking.

68,000 people have recovered from the corona virus, says a report from John Hopkins University. Therefore the corona virus does not automatically kill. There is a high probability of surviving if your immune system is strong.

According to the CDC, there haven’t been many confirmed cases of the new coronaviruses in children, and even fewer with severe complications. New information is coming out every day (often several times a day), but a report from the WHO noted that only 2.4 percent of COVID-19 cases in China happened in people 18 and under, and 0.2 percent of those cases were critical.

Sore throat, headache, fever, diarrhea

It is believed to spread primarily by people and their respiratory droplets (coughs, sneezes, spit).

Touching surfaces that may be infected and touching your mouths or eyes can also get you infected.

There’s no specific treatment for many viral infections. Treatment is typically focused on relief of symptoms while your body works to clear the infection. This can include things like:

  • drinking fluids to prevent dehydration
  • getting plenty of rest
  • using OTC pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) to relieve aches, pains, and fever
  • taking OTC decongestants to help with a runny or stuffy nose
  • sucking on a throat lozenge to help ease a sore throat

Learn how to make your Immune System strong enough to be able to survive the corona virus.
